Renowned Tamil film actress Gandhimathi, known for her roles as the loud dominant mother or the talkative comedian, died on Friday morning, due to sickness. Veteran actress, Gandhimathi passed away yesterday having succumbed to chronic heart trouble which had been plaguing her for the past few years.
She has suffered from cardiac problems for a couple of years which forced her to stop acting in films and confine to television serials. Gandhimathi has acted in more than 300 films in Tamil and other southern languages. Her performance in ’16 Vayathinilae’ was much appreciated by critics. She has appeared in over 300 South Indian films and was also seen on the small screen.
Gandhimathi has played the role of the lead actors’ mother or grandmother in numerous films and has been a part of many super hit movies like Mann Vaasanai, Muthu, 16 Vayathiniley, Karakattakaaran and many others.
Gandhimathi started her career doing comedy roles, but established herself as a character artiste in Bharathi Raaja’s Mann Vasanai. Known for her expressive eyes, and intense portrayal of emotional scenes, Gandhimathi created quite a niche for herself in the industry. She has also acted in a number of TV serials.
Gandhimathi has acted with top actors of Kollywood like Kamal, Rajinikanth, Satyaraj, Prabhu and Ramarajan. The 65-year-old actress, Gandhimathi is survived by her two adopted sons. Gandhimathi’s residence is being visited by a steady stream of celebrities from the film industry those who have known and worked with her. She will be sorely missed.
